Freedom camping does not mean parking anywhere for free. The vehicle must meet the applicable standard, and the place itself must allow overnight camping.
The nationwide self-containment change
From 7 June 2026, only green self-containment warrants are recognised for freedom-camping purposes under the national transition. A qualifying vehicle needs a fixed toilet that can be used inside the vehicle, plus compliant water, wastewater and ventilation facilities.
Certification helps demonstrate that the vehicle has the required facilities. It does not create permission to camp on land where freedom camping is prohibited or restricted.
Local rules still decide where you may stay
Councils can prohibit or restrict freedom camping in particular areas. DOC manages separate conservation land and campsites, and private land requires the owner’s permission. Read signs at the location and check the current council or DOC information rather than relying solely on an old app review.
What to check before stopping
- Is overnight camping permitted at this exact location?
- Is a certified self-contained vehicle required?
- Is there a time limit, arrival window or marked bay?
- Are fires, pets, generators or outdoor furniture restricted?
- Is the site suitable for the weather and vehicle access?
Use a mixed campsite plan
A good South Island itinerary combines permitted freedom-camping areas with DOC campsites, council facilities and holiday parks. Paid sites are useful for showers, laundry, charging, fresh water and approved waste disposal.
Responsible camping protects access
- Use the onboard toilet and never dispose of waste outside approved facilities.
- Carry rubbish out and leave the area cleaner than you found it.
- Keep noise, lights and generators considerate.
- Do not block roads, gates, boat ramps or scenic access.
- Follow fire restrictions, weather warnings and local instructions.
- Move on when the permitted stay ends.
Apps help, but official sources control
Travel apps can be helpful for discovering places and reading recent experiences, but listings may be outdated. Confirm the site with the council, DOC or land manager, especially when signs or conditions differ from an app.
